Description

I recently picked up a copy of “DOOM” for the PS4 from the bargain bin and I have been enjoying it quite a bit. It’s been so much fun that I was inspired to create something of a “hellscape” terrain of my own.
The title is a homage to one of my very first 3D renders which I created around the time the original DOOM was still being played.
I used Oculus Medium to create the landforms and Zbrush to add some detail. The sun was created using Apophysis while experimenting with floral forms.

Hey Ryan, I put this background on my triple screen display and the rocky foreground took over. the planet scape background was more of an afterthought. may i recommend less foreground in the future? these shots are my favorite! just would like to be able to see more of the space than the rocks.

  2. doc [liferplus]

As someone who plays doom, this definitely has a Doom feel. I like this one and the snow version. Very cool.

  3. BobC [lifer]

I now have the gallery version on my computer at home and the Pickle Jar version at the office! It is my sense that the effect of the PJ version is sufficiently different that it may deserve its own place in the gallery.

  4. Littlemom [liferplus]

I really like this version, but I really liked the original one as well.

  5. Eric [liferplus]

One last word before I shove off … Love how the two versions (old & new) are sitting side by side in the slider at the top of the page, at least until your next masterpiece. Really shows how much your work (and SW) has evolved. Super Cool!!!

    Cheers!

  6. Eric [liferplus]

NP anytime & TY for the fix, and BTW the PJ ver is spectacular!

  7. Eric [liferplus]

Zach, go to the PJ page and click on “all resolutions” link. Then see if your size is there. I found my uhd file there.

    Cheers!

  8. Ryan

That was indeed a typo on my part. The file is listed properly now. Thanks for the heads up!!

  9. Eric [liferplus]

    Hey Ryan,

I noticed that the 7680 x 2160 is missing, `cause that’s one of my screen sizes, but when I went digging I found … https://secure.digitalblasphemy.com/content/jpgs/2x/vulcan2x1912xuhd.jpg … Please note the vulcan2x … yes X not K in the name. Typo or a conscious choice?

    Thanks, really like this one!

  10. Zach [lifer]

WOW, the PJ version is GREAT! Any chance of a multiscreen render for it?

Your sci-fi pieces never cease to amaze me! This has such depth. Dark and intense.

  12. eyal [lifer]

Thanks for a great MultiScreen render

I really like this, the barren simplicity, and other worldly look and feel of this render, it does remind me of several planet scapes of really cool Sy-Fy movies, great detail, this is a really awesome render my friend.

  14. karzist [liferplus]

Love it, both the rock and glow and the detail in the streamers from the white light in the sky 🙂

The high intensity white star (hellstar?) does make it hard to use as a transparent terminal background, so I can’t help wondering if you’d like to do one with something lower contrast instead of the white star? Maybe a similar thing but in deep reds or oranges?

But then again, that seems to be the idea.

Eagerly awaiting the dual 16:9 ratio renders (yup, twin 3840xx2160 monitors. Old eyes.)

MorpheusinKC beat me to it, Reminded me of the landscape from Riddick as well. Not enough to resemble it too closely though, as it’s clearly an original. Still trying to figure out how to get the non watermarked copies as a Life Member…something doesn’t want to let me get to it.

  17. Dustin Snyder [nonmonthly]

Reminds me of DOOM and of the last episode of Star Trek TNG (where Picard was in the distant past on earth)

  18. BobC [lifer]

This is barren, wildly alien, desolate, scary, and full of allusions to all kinds of creepy things.

Brilliant. I love it. it’s on my desktop

To answer your question, the artwork in this gallery was created primarily for me to use as my desktop wallpaper. Fortunately enough folks have enjoyed my renders and been willing to pay for access to them that I’ve made a decent living for myself and my family for the past 20 years. I’ve never claimed to create images on request for my Members nor do I think my Members are very interested in paying me to render someone else’s vision. You either like them or you don’t. Artists tend to go through phases where they might not be creating the work you enjoyed during a different phase. This is normal.

a Bruce Springsteen song. “Blinded By The Light”…Honestly Ryan, do you make wallpapers for you or for your paying patrons? Hey, some of your customers love them. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I respect your work. Nuff said…

  21. MorpheusInKC [nonmonthly]

@TheoSchultz called out that it is straight off a planet/Sci-fi movie… Reminds me specifically of the planet Crematoria from the movie Riddick. Well done, sir!

  22. Phil C. [basicmember]

Glad you made the DooM reference because when I looked at this, that was just what I thought. 🙂 There’s a very interesting quality to the red lighting from underground; if I peer at the landscape for long enough, I could almost swear that the red lighting was fading in and out, almost like it was breathing. Just an illusion, of course…..

  23. Theo Schultz [lifer]

This is awesome! Straight off of a fantasy Planet / Sci-fi movie.

  24. George [nonmonthly]

    I LOVE IT!

  25. Littlemom [liferplus]

This is a great render love this planetscape.

  26. Mark A. [liferplus]

    Ryan, I love it!

Images like this are what made DigitalBlasphemy so captivating over a decade ago for me. This image evokes that sense of wonder and imagination that I’ve come to expect from your work. Each time I get an e-mail notification of a new piece I immediately go to the site and check. Thank you so much.
