Description
I created the original “Black Angel” as a Halloween wallpaper but I was already thinking how interesting it might look as a winter scene.
I’ve used the same snow-covering technique that I first attempted in Hokkaido to cover the branches and vines with snow. This scene, however, was considerably more complicated so the results were not always perfect.
Inspired by the Black Angel in Iowa City’s Oakland Cemetary, which I became familiar with during my time as an undergrad at the University of Iowa in the 90s.

I’m using this for Halloween 2020, because it snowed like hell in Northwestern British Columbia, where I live, starting early evening of the 29th, and didn’t stop until early morning of the 30th.

I’d love to see you do a whole seasonal series of this scene as you’ve done with some of your other images. The original is a lovely and moody piece of art that is excellent for Halloween and I delight at changing it to this now that we’re in the midst of winter.

When I saw this I immediately said “That’s the Black Angel in Oakland. As a fellow UofI grad so awed by this interpretation. I’ve been a lifetime member and contributor to the Shadowfax project – now I’m even more honored to help a fellow Hawkeye! Graduated in ’90 so you were probably right behind me! Go Hawks! Go DB!

I absolutely love this! Broken, somber, yet still dignified. There is a reverent hush that snow brings, a deafening silence. I think it pairs beautifully with the surroundings. I do appreciate the foreground out of focus as well, it lends a voyeuristic feel…. delicious!

Pretty, interesting, creepy…
Looks a bit “dirty”, possibly because it is SO monochromatic… the snow looks like dirt or ash… yet the snow is white. I, also, think that the foreground is too out of focus… the foreground depth of field looks way off. Noticed that the angel has a broken wing and ruffled feathers on one side…

I love the fact that since there is a cemetery surrounding this picture, it almost feels like this is from the viewpoint of a zombie peeking out from his grave to look at this scene. Truly beautiful picture, always will be a big fan of your work!
