Description

Years ago I saw a photo of an Indonesian volcano that quickly become jammed in my memory banks. Sort of like an earworm but for the mind’s eye. I’ve been wanting to try to bring it to life for a while but I knew it would be a pretty complex undertaking. Indeed this scene took quite a bit longer than usual to get right.
I decided it would be more interesting if I based my scene on my memory of the photo rather than looking up the actual place. Maybe you will still recognize it…

This is definitely one of the images that just pulls me into it. For some reason, I find myself looking for dinosaurs among the treeline, and trying to peer a little farther into that pit! There really is a lot going on here in terms of detail! I love the long shadows of the trees on the right. With the built-in light sources, I think this would make an interesting evening or nightscape, too!

Sorry to nag about the dual screens.

Ryan is going back and updating earlier classics, so in a few years (maybe ten) he’ll get around to this one too.

  4. Hadrianel [lifer]

Really like this render, thanks a lot. A night version would be lovely :))

    Great render Ryan!

I like the flora. Maybe some fauna fleeing to safety? Will there multi screen versions coming soon?

  13. Brandi U. [liferplus]

This is as perfect as can be. Beautiful.

    Amazing!

Ryan, here’s a little inspiration for a night render – with some lovely nighttime pyroclastics.

Love it! I second the idea of a night version.

  16. Xetal [liferplus]

Further to my comment below, if we do get a fire and brimstone version it probably ought to be a night scene

  17. TrekGateWars [lifer]

Great work, Ryan! The lighting angle and interplay of the shadows makes it feel very realistic.

  18. Shao Lang [lifer]

Absolutely stunning! Very picturesque as far as scenes go. Like other comments have stated, a depiction, maybe in a pickle jar form, with fiery boulders and lava flowing would be awesome too.

  19. Xetal [liferplus]

…but I agree we could use a version with more fire & brimstone

I love art depicting the violent wrath of Mother Nature, or just her bad moods at times. Hopefully this volcano is just letting off some steam. 🙂 Keep them coming!

I like it. Great detail and colors. This is my personal opinion, but I’d love a version with a lot more “fire and brimestone” raining from the sky.
