Description

I thought it would be fun to turn the lights down on my Dapplewood scene and add some fireflies (something I haven’t done since “Summerwood” over 12 years ago). I hope you enjoy it!

Ryan, my hope and expectation for a “Dapplewood Winter-Night” are almost too much to bear!

This has such feel it’s not hard to imagine having to use one’s hands to move through it. Pure magic and though I’d like to see a hint of a magical creature in it, I think the tickles the brain gets in that department are quite enough. Superb!

Thank you! Summerwood has always been a favorite, and now you’ve given me another favorite. The feel of a warm summer night, the moonlight, and the fireflies (although we called them lightning bugs in my childhood) create a wonderful mood.

  4. Jami [basicmember]

This is beautiful! Summerwood has always been one of my favorite wallpapers and I love this spiritual successor. I hope we will see the multiple screen options soon.

Thanks for taking my suggestions on board, Ryan. I really do think the new render is a good improvement. The number of fireflies just feels more appropriate now, and they no longer appear to be all at the front of the scene. Instead, you can see them going into the distance (in the middle, especially), so they now help create a sense of depth, rather than working against it.

I must also say that I like the improved moonlighting of the branches at the right of the picture in this new render. You’ve got some really good highlighting going on now, which was totally absent before, and that too is a very useful improvement. Overall, this is a great improvement, despite the subtlety of the change.

    I agree with Jenanne

  7. Jenanne [liferplus]

Just the right number and placement of fireflies; your slight dial back did the trick. The sense of depth indicated by the firefly sizes and locations is greatly improved as well. Thanks, Ryan!

I’ve updated “Dapplewood (Night)” with a version that (slightly) dials back the number of fireflies in the scene.

Summerwood is still my alltime favorite wallpaper, I always liked the blue colors and the peaceful scene. Reminds me of some very long and warm nights, sitting at the machine, all the windows in the house open, warm blue (!) light shining off my screen …

Finally a worthy successor! Anyhow I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on the original lossless render of Summerwood from back then 😉 Nowadays, sitting in front of a 4K screen, the low resolution doesn’t look that good…

I can almost hear the crickets chirping in the background, maybe a tree frog or two. Very nice, the colors are vibrant even tho’ it’s a moonlit night. However, as some have already stated, there are too many fireflies. A clear case of less is more, I think. Regardless, thanks for another great render, Ryan!!

  11. Kelton [nonmonthly]

Excellent work as normal. Look forward to the dual screen version and maybe a version where the lightning bugs fly around (moving)

I could see spending time here at night, it is just as Beautiful as the Day version, Simply Beautiful

  13. Geoff Williams [basicmember]

In the night scenes when you add highlights like the Christmas Tree in the forest, I love those. It is such a dramatic contrast and focuses an element that would be missed otherwise.

  14. Xetal [liferplus]

…which is unusual for me. I think the moonbeams and the fireflies don’t mesh right: one or the other might work better?

  15. Jenanne [liferplus]

Overall I adore Dapplewood Night; I almost always prefer the night versions. However, I do agree with Richard that fewer fireflies would improve their impact. But I do think they add to the scene; I wouldn’t want them eliminated altogether. Too, I wish the flowers stood out a bit more. I don’t know how you’d achieve this without making them luminous; adding more moon rays might make the render too grainy. But these are minor issues; overall I love this render!

  16. Richard H. [liferplus]

Hm. I like this, but tend to agree with the negative comments about the fireflies. I think there are two problems:

    1. There are arguably too many fireflies; a few might be nice, but so many are a bit dominant and distracting.

    2. To me, it looks as though all the fireflies have been plonked into the foreground of the picture, with the result that it lacks depth and looks very 2D. The fireflies could go further into the distance, with some ‘pinprick’ ones further away, and thus enhance rather than detract from the sense of volume.

I agree that a pickle-jar version without fireflies would be nice to have, but for me, I think a slightly reworked version with fireflies would be an improvement overall.

I definitely prefer the night versions of your wallpapers. I’ve just set this one as my current desktop background.

  18. Erika [basicmember]

I find myself agreeing with littlemom. it is beautiful but the lights are a bit distracting. There is so much detail that doesn’t get noticed. A pickle jar without the lights would be even better.

  19. Gibbylinks [basicmember]

I like it Ryan, but it lacks detail compared to the daylight version.

  20. Gibbylinks [basicmember]

I like it Ryan, but it lacks detail compared to the daylight version.

  21. Elena Woontner [basicmember]

To me they are much more compelling. I love the contrast between light and dark. Night is cool, silent, mysterious. Love it.

  22. Mario [basicmember]

Looks like millions of fireflys lighting up the ight. Well done!

  23. Littlemom [liferplus]

I really like the concept behind the night version of this render and overall I like it, but I find the little lights actually detract from the beauty of the scene. Is it possible to give us a night render without the little lights in it?

Ryan, this is like summer wood on steroids. lol. it’s beyond perfect.
